Offering a flexible,
high-touch alternative to insured plans
Back in 2002,
UnitedHealthcare acquired a strong, service-oriented business—Midwest Security
Administration (MSA)—giving UnitedHealthcare entry to the
distinctly different world of third-party administration. Access to the powerful UnitedHealthcare
networks opened more doors for MSA since they
could now offer competitive discounts along with their highly flexible,
personalized service. Their
continued success led UnitedHealthcare to purchase United Medical Resources
(UMR) in 2005, accelerating UMR’s growth and gaining UnitedHealthcare’s
capabilities in underserved markets such as hospitals.
These
acquisitions were successful but didn’t provide a truly national reach since
both had service centers only in the
Midwest and neither
specialized in segments such as labor and trust and governmental plans. Seeing
the need to further invest, UnitedHealthcare acquired Fiserv Health in 2008.
This acquisition solidified UnitedHealthcare’s commitment to the self-funded
market, offering a flexible, high-touch alternative to insured plans.Today, we
bring an enhanced UMR brand to market—one with truly national scope yet regional
attention to clients.
